Cheap clients will always cost you more than they pay you

Shot of two colleagues having a discussion in an office

I’ve spent over 15 years building brands for athletes, entertainers, and emerging names across sports, fashion, and entertainment. I’ve seen what it looks like when a partnership is done right — when both sides show up with respect, trust, and aligned expectations.

And I’ve seen what it looks like when it goes wrong. Not because of a bad strategy. Not because the results weren’t there. But because the client never valued the work in the first place.

Let me be direct: the client who haggles you down to the bottom of your rate card is never the one who’s easiest to work with. It is always, always the opposite.

The fantasy they’re paying for

Cheap clients operate on a fantasy: that paying less somehow unlocks a magician. When the results don’t come fast enough, they come for you. They micromanage. They question every hour, every invoice, every deliverable, every meal you logged. They’ll schedule calls to discuss the calls you already had. They ask for discounts on the discount.

“The lower the budget, the higher the scrutiny. Not because they’re detail-oriented — but because they never valued what you do.”

Your relationships. Your strategy. Your decade-plus of hard-won expertise. None of it registers as real work to someone who downplays your hard work.

What it actually costs you

And the real cost isn’t the low rate. It’s everything around it — the hours you didn’t spend on better clients, the opportunities you missed, and the peace of mind you burned through. I’ve had clients who gave me anxiety, sleepless nights, and actual dread when their name appeared in my inbox. One client, years ago, took me 48 hours just to mentally prepare a response.

No retainer is worth that.

How I handle it now:

  1. I don’t. If the budget doesn’t match the ask, it’s not a fit. No is a complete sentence.
  2. Consulting only. I share the strategy — they execute. The result is on them, not me.
  3. Digital products. Package the expertise. Serve budget clients at scale without giving them access to my calendar or my nervous system.

Protect your rates. Protect your time.

Protect your peace.

If you’ve had a stressful client — drop it in the comments. You are not alone.

XOXO,
