As American fashion designers gear up for the Spring/Summer 2026 New York Fashion Week (NYFW) shows, the anticipation is palpable. With the Official Calendar released by the CFDA this week, it’s time to start planning how to get your foot in the door of one of the most exclusive fashion events of the year. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to secure your spot at NYFW, including tips on navigating the official calendar and making the most of your opportunities.

Understanding the NYFW Calendar
Firstly, it’s important to know that many NYFW events will pop up around the official schedule, but only the shows approved and listed by the CFDA are considered part of the Official NYFW Calendar. These shows are typically higher-profile, with significant media and influencer attendance. Events not listed on the CFDA calendar are often independent and may not receive the same level of coverage or star power. The official website for NYFW is https://nyfw.com/ and is organized by IMG in partnership with the CFDA. On NYFW the Shows you can research last season’s designers and venues.
How to Get an Invitation
NYFW is predominantly an invite-only event, meaning you can’t simply buy a ticket to most of the shows. If you come across a show selling tickets, it’s likely not part of the official NYFW calendar. To get an invite, you need to demonstrate what you bring to the table or how you can add value to the event. Here are five effective ways to increase your chances of securing an invitation:
- Contact PR Firms
- Research and Reach Out: Identify the PR firms representing the designers you’re interested in. PR firms are typically in charge of the guest list, press, and any communication to the public. Reach out to them with a well-crafted pitch explaining who you are, your role in the fashion industry, and why you would be a valuable addition to their guest list. A professional and personalized approach can make a big difference. We created a LIST OF ALL THE TOP PR FIRMS AT NYFW with their emails to make your research process easier.

- Contact the Designers Directly
- Build Relationships: If you have a specific designer in mind, don’t hesitate to contact them directly. Make sure to highlight your passion for their work and any relevant experience or connections you have. A personal touch can go a long way in this industry.

- Volunteer
- Get Involved: Many shows need extra hands, whether backstage or front of house. Volunteering not only gives you a chance to be at the event but also provides valuable networking opportunities. Be proactive in reaching out to organizers and express your willingness to help. If you plan on volunteering, now is the time to reach out.

- Offer Your Creative Services
- Show Your Skills: If you’re a photographer, stylist, makeup artist, hairstylist, or wardrobe stylist, consider offering your services. Even if the budget is tight, offering to volunteer your skills can get you access to the event. Additionally, you might be able to request media credentials, which can lead to paid opportunities later on through selling photos or other content to publications.

- Request Media Credentials
- Leverage Your Platform: If you run a blog, YouTube channel, or social media account with a significant following, you might qualify for media credentials. This can grant you access to shows and provide an opportunity to create content that highlights your coverage of NYFW. Photographers and videographers can request media credentials as well.

Models: How to Walk in a NYFW Show
I receive a flood of inquiries from models about how they can walk in a show. Here are some ways to make your dream a reality:
- Join a Modeling Agency: Most designers and casting directors prefer working with agency models because it ensures higher quality and reliability. The top agencies are Elite, IMG, Ford Models, Women 360, Wilhelmina Models, Next NYC, NY Model Management, CAA Fashion, and WME. Make a trip to NYC and meet with these agencies. You only get one shot to make a good impression, so bring your comp card and show up in tight clothing (leggings/skinny jeans and a tank) so they can see your shape. Wear little to no makeup and always bring your heels.
- Attend Open Castings: Some designers host open castings 1-3 weeks before the shows. Follow the designers you want to walk for on social media as they might post casting information there. I usually reshare any casting calls I see on my social channels as well. Set a Google alert for NYFW open castings to stay updated.
- Contact Casting Directors Directly: Reach out to casting directors for the opportunity to audition. Make sure to have a strong portfolio and a professional attitude.
Representing Influential Clients
If you represent a client with a significant following, outstanding content, or high influence value, you can submit an RSVP inquiry on their behalf and ask for a +1. Even if they can’t get you a seat next to your client, they may allow you in as an escort or at least give you a media credential. This could be another way for you to get in. Don’t be discouraged if you or your client doesn’t have millions of followers. Many influencers with under 100k followers attend the shows. Go ahead and shoot your shot!
Always send a thank-you note after the show so they will remember you. I sometimes send Starbucks or Chipotle gift cards as a token of appreciation. Establishing a relationship with the PR firm or designer will make it easier to get in and also attend multiple shows in the future.

Alternative Events to Attend
If you can’t get into the runway shows, consider attending alternative events. NYFW The Shows now also offers fashion talks, experiences, and showroom presentations. These are all great opportunities to start networking and building relationships with publicists, designers, and production companies. Networking at these events can open doors for future opportunities and help you get closer to the runway.
