First, we need to break down the budget for NYFW. If you want to showcase at NYFW on the official calendar, you must budget for at least $125k. Below you’ll see the main line items we’re usually working with during NYFW. Not included are the PR company company, staff, and the production of the actual collection. I’ve often secured sponsors to offset costs, but never plan a show with the hope of securing a sponsor. Let’s not work with the imaginary ‘what if’ money, sometimes sponsors pull out, don’t come through, or conversations don’t materialize until the next show.
But what are the benefits besides the prestige of showcasing on the highest platform in the U.S.? An independent study on the effectiveness of participation in Fashion Week was conducted by IMG (NYFW organizer) and powered by Launchmetrics. Below are some of the results:
- MIV Boost: NYFW participants can achieve up to four times more Media Impact Value (MIV) than standalone presentations.
- Global Exposure: NYFW offers global media attention, with 40% of MIV attributed to its association.
- Revenue Uplift: Runway presentations can boost revenue by 40%, as proven by industry leaders like Moda Operandi.
Do you want my opinion? If you have the money or an investor then showcase at NYFW. It’s great for exposure and to get on the radar of buyers, magazines, and celebrity stylists. It will increase your credibility and legitimize your business in the fashion world. But please make sure that you are on the official NYFW schedule. No shade to the smaller productions but only the shows on the official calendar receive the media recognition and industry approval. Will you see a huge increase in sales? Probably not after your first show but it opens doors to other opportunities down the line.
If money is tight and you’re completely self-funded I’d rather recommend doing a presentation with some of the showrooms which will still get you on the official NYFW schedule in order to receive media buzz and industry interest. I’ve been a fan of the BIFC (Black In Fashion Council) Showrooms in partnership with NYFW the Shows.
Another recommendation is to conceptualize a virtual runway that is pre-recorded. IMG has digital packages as well. One of my favorite NYFW events is an intimate dinner with a very curated guest list. Public Relations is extremely important when you make an appearance at NYFW, you want to maximize your money and make sure you secure at least a few press features and make connections with key decision-makers in the industry.
